The Grading System
The judo grading system of coloured belts shows a student’s progression through the judo pathway of grades from novice to experienced judoka. The belt colour is a recognition of the judoka’s knowledge and ability. All novices wear a white belt until they achieve their first grade.
Up to the level of brown belt (18th Mon/1st Kyu) gradings are performed in the host judo club by approved coaches. To achieve a Dan (black-belt) grade judoka must either compete at a National Grading and/or points scoring events for a competitive grade or be examined by a Senior Examiner for a Technical grade.
