New Term Up & Running

Shishi Kai has re-opened following our summer break. For those of you reading this with the intention of joining us, I’m sorry to say that all sessions are now full (and then some!). I can’t see this changing before the October mid-term break.

If you are interested in visiting the club, either as an experienced judoka or for a free taster session, then you can email chris@shishikai.co.uk with your name, age and experience level. Your information will be added to our waiting list until such time as a space becomes available.

My apologies to those wishing to start straight away. Shishi Kai is a popular club with a retention rate we’re very proud of and, as such, the happiness and safety of all our current members takes priority before offering spaces to newcomers. With limited space in the dojo, and no possibility of adding in additional sessions, I’m afraid our hands are tied.

The Club

Shishi Kai is a fun, family friendly judo club based in the heart of Edinburgh. The club was established in 1998 by Jim and Sheila Syrett, who were soon joined by son, Chris Syrett. Now head coach, and responsible for the day-to-day running of the club, Chris is keen to uphold his parents welcoming family values which put fun at the heart of learning.

Our main Dojo can be found on the 4th floor (Myreside Suite) of The Eric Liddell Centre, 15 Morningside Road, Edinburgh, EH10 4DP. We cater to all ages and abilities from 5yrs onwards, with sessions currently running on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings.

Shishi Kai’s coaching staff, led by head coach Chris, are all fully qualified and regularly attend CPD (Continuous Professional Development) courses run by JudoScotland, our national governing body. All are First Aid and SPC (Safeguarding & Protecting Children) trained and all are PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) certified through Disclosure Scotland.

Complete beginners, returning judoka or experienced competitors are welcome to join us anytime, however, with over 250 members, most sessions are very busy so please first email info@shishikai.co.uk for spaces and further information.

Your first session at the club is free to give it a go and we can lend you a judo jacket and belt if you need it. A t-shirt and soft bottoms are best (ie no buttons or zips), long hair should be tied back, nails should be short and clean and of course we do judo in bare feet but please keep your shoes on until you arrive at the dojo. A water bottle might be a good idea too!

After School Clubs

In addition to the classes at the Eric Liddell Centre, Shishi Kai also runs a number of after school Judo clubs in primary schools in and around Edinburgh. Currently we coach in South Morningside PS (Mon), Roslin PS (Wed) and Bruntsfield PS (Fri). These clubs are only open to pupils of their respective schools, for more information or spaces please ask Chris or contact the school parent council directly.
